Final Video Script

Good morning class! I’m glad to see you all back for another day of math! Today we are going to talk about number and operations. Don’t worry, “operations” may sound like a big thing, but it’s really easy topic to learn. We have all learned addition by ways of counting on our fingers, like so... [Show example of adding by using fingers]. Now, I am going to show you how to add and subtract in the way of literally joining and separating counting blocks with real-life examples.

This set is 2, do you know why? [Count the blocks with students to show there are 2 blocks]. Yes, there are 2 blocks giving us a visual representation of the number 2. Farmer brown already has 2 cows, he needs to figure out how many more cows he will have if he receives 2 more. Therefore, we need to figure out what 2+2 is so we can tell Farmer Brown how many cows he will have. [Get out the cows and Farmer Brown scene, do the math using the cows, count all the cows, finish problem]. Therefore Farmer Brown will have 4 cows in all. Here is the same problem on the blocks. We have 2 blocks and want to add 2 more [count all blocks] …How many blocks do we have now? Yes, we have 4.

Now let’s try subtraction.

What number do we have represented here? [Count the blocks with students].
We have 6 blocks in this row. Let’s say that Peter Pan has 6 Lost Boys standing beside him. 2 of the Lost Boys decide to go back to their mother. How many Lost Boys are standing by Peter Pan now? [Act out the story with the Peter Pan and Lost Boys manipulatives]. That’s right, there are 4 Lost Boys left with Peter! Now showing this on the blocks is the exact same way. We started with 6 and took away 2, leaving us with how many blocks? [Count the amount of blocks left with class]. 4 blocks are left, that is correct.

You have all done an excellent job today learning the joining and separating actions when adding and subtracting numbers. I am very pleased with your responses and attitude today. Tomorrow we will be working on strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

**This won’t all be video footage, I will probably have pictures of the Peter Pan/Farmer Brown scenes with the blocks as video footage.**
